The Community Forestry Associate Manager will oversee implementation of projects that significantly expand tree canopy in Southeast Los Angeles by planting and caring for public trees. The Community Forestry Associate Manager will lead development and city approval of planting plans, sourcing of tree stock, organization and execution of staff and volunteer tree planting, care and distribution events, and ongoing staff tree care. The position will help to engage and inspire community members regarding the important benefits of tree canopy expansion, growing public support for the project and a base of community volunteers. The position must also ensure accurate tracking and reporting of key metrics, including trees planted, distributed, and cared for through routine maintenance. The Community Forestry Associate Manager will supervise a team of urban forestry positions and will also be supported by administrative and communications staff and a community organizer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, evaluate and expand programs to ensure a healthy, functioning urban forest and increase tree canopy coverage in high-need areas by organizing and engaging communities in fun and meaningful tree plantings, tree care, residential tree distributions and community greening projects.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and support community volunteers on tree plantings, tree care and community greening projects.
  • Train and supervise TreePeople’s Southeast Los Angeles Community Forestry team, and play a leading role in their hiring process.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, including oversight of the Community Forestry team, providing direction as needed and ensuring timely and accurate approval and submission of associate timesheets.
  • Conduct performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with local community-based organizations, elected officials, public agencies, businesses and other community stakeholders to expand TreePeople’s social and environmental impact.
  • Conduct site assessments and develop detailed planting plans that include species and locations.
  • Develop and implement project work plans, including event scheduling, dig alert, permitting, tree sourcing and inspection.
  • Organize, support and lead community workshops and volunteer led events, evaluating future opportunities and attend site visits.
  • Manage and maintain vehicle, supply and equipment inventories.
  • Gather monitor and track data on tree plantings for reporting requirements and to ensure successful implementation of tree maintenance plans.
  • Support contract and funder reporting requirements, including documentation and presentation of project deliverables, including photos and sign-in sheets, preparation of narrative summaries, and greenhouse gas calculations.
  • Conduct community engagement and draft outreach and educational materials to grow interest in volunteer event opportunities, urban tree canopy expansion and community led tree care.
  • Participate and represent TreePeople at meetings, fundraising, marketing, membership and volunteer events.
  • Assist with TreePeople’s policy and research and public education initiatives, including but not limited to climate and water resilience, urban heat island mitigation, urban cooling, urban forestry management plans, and equity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong foundation of urban forestry principles and best practices, including experience planting and caring for street trees.
  • Experience with staff supervision, project management and community organizing.
  • Solid computer skills, including email, document and spreadsheet basics.
  • Highly-organized, strong work-ethic, friendly, smart, proactive and a quick-learner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: engaging, listening, negotiating, public speaking and writing.

TreePeople is seeking an individual interested in community forestry to join our team as a Community Forestry Coordinator. The Community Forestry program engages, inspires, and supports residents to take environmental action in their communities. This position will assist the Community Forestry Manager with planning, organizing, implementing and accomplishing day to day operations of their assigned projects, conduct various aspects of the project such as leading and supporting tree planting, tree maintenance, volunteer coordination, community engagement, and data collection within the San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities.

TreePeople seeks a full-time Forest Health Engagement Associate to support our Mountain Forestry team. This role will engage with community members during community restoration, tree plantings, tree care, and tree distribution events by working closely with forestry staff to facilitate and supervise community volunteers. This position will oversee tree surveys to identify the Gold Spotted Oak Borer (GSOB) with members of the Conservation Corps group. Through these efforts, the Associate will uphold TreePeople’s mission to inspire and empower individuals to take meaningful action for the environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead Goldspotted Oak Borer (GSOB) tree surveys in various locations, including the Angeles National Forest and the Santa Monica Mountains.
  • Ensure that Conservation Corps members and volunteers follow safety protocols.
  • Maintain the inventory of supplies used for the oak surveys.
  • Ensure the accuracy of all gathered data using applications such as ArcGIS, Survey123, FieldMaps, Salesforce, and related tools.
  • Serve as a community liaison, sharing information and educational resources on GSOB, survey work, and the “buy it where you burn it” initiative.
  • Report weekly on the number of trees surveyed and individuals reached through engagement efforts.
  • Assist with gathering information and updating educational materials as needed.
  • Participate in community educational workshops related to GSOB by assisting in the setup and clean up, presenting, and sharing personal experiences gained in the field.
  • Attend public-facing events such as town hall meetings, fundraisers, community workshops, and community educational events, and assist in community engagement outreach efforts to recruit diverse stakeholders.
  • Assist the regional team in coordinating special projects.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA/BS Degree or 1-3 years of experience in Forestry, Environmental Science, Conservation, or related field.
  • Community-oriented individual who understands forestry health issues, particularly combating GSOB in California.
  • Knowledge and experience using ArcGIS, Survey123, FieldMaps, Salesforce preferred.
  • Possess a valid California driver's license and proof of insurance.
  • Must be comfortable driving on rugged unpaved roads and fire roads.
  • Able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to work outside for hours at a time at tree planting and care events, which includes physically digging holes, lifting equipment and planting trees, among other activities.

We inspire, engage, and support the community to increase the urban tree canopy and address climate threats and environmental justice in Los Angeles and across the region.

We are seeking an Outdoor Equity Educator for the Natural Connections program that delivers environmental and sustainability education, family tours, and moonlight hikes to over 10,000 people each year at Coldwater Canyon Park, Salt Lake Park, Audubon Center at Debs Park, Cindy Montanez Natural Park, Rudy Ortega Park, and Stunt Ranch. The goal of the program is to connect people, especially youth, to outdoor spaces and create a more climate resilient city through the planting and care of trees; conserving, capturing and infiltrating water; creating healthy, productive soil; and more.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver intentional, fun, and educational experiences to youth, community, and family groups on most weekdays.
  • Deliver weekend guided tours through natural spaces for young people, community, and family groups as needed.
  • Deliver evening Moonlight hikes as needed.
  • Supervise, support, and lead large groups of students participating in community plantings and mountain restoration events.
  • Set up stations and ensure a clean and safe space prior to student arrival.
  • Provide in-class educational opportunities at schools, local libraries, and other education-centric spaces.
  • Maintain all equipment, displays, and props needed to carry out Natural Connections tours, Eco-Tours, Family Tours, and Moonlight Hikes.
  • Support TreePeople’s Nursery, Park Operations, Urban Forestry, and Mountain Forestry teams as needed.
  • Represent TreePeople in the classroom, community, and beyond.
  • Participate in Education and TreePeople All-Staff gatherings.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be committed to environmental sustainability and social justice.

  • Experience and/or education in interpretive/environmental education, and/or performing arts is preferred.

In addition to tree canopy expansion in the San Fernando Valley, the Regional Manager will play a vital role in growing TreePeople’s impact in the region through continued urban and mountain forestry projects, equitable access to nature, and urban greening.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate internal systems to maintain efficient data collection and project management for all San Fernando Valley forestry projects.
  • Manage, supervise, and evaluate San Fernando Valley team employees to ensure compliance of Employee Handbook, contract deliverables, job responsibilities and other duties assigned.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and expand programs to ensure a healthy, functioning urban forest and increase tree canopy coverage in the region by organizing and engaging communities in fun and meaningful tree plantings, tree care, residential tree distributions and community greening projects.

The position will lead the community forestry team to engage and inspire community members regarding the important benefits of tree canopy expansion, growing public support for the project, and a base of community volunteers. The position must also ensure accurate tracking and reporting of key metrics, including trees planted, distributed, and cared for. The Regional Manager will lead a growing team of community forestry positions and will also be supported by community organizers.

In addition to tree canopy expansion in the South LA/SELA, the Regional Manager will play a vital role in growing TreePeople’s impact in the region through continued urban and mountain forestry projects, equitable access to nature, and urban greening.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate internal systems to maintain efficient data collection and project management for all our South LA/SELA forestry projects.
  • Manage, supervise, and evaluate South LA/SELA team employees to ensure compliance with the Employee Handbook, contract deliverables, job responsibilities, and other duties assigned.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and expand programs to ensure a healthy, functioning urban forest and increase tree canopy coverage in the region by organizing and engaging communities in fun and meaningful tree plantings, tree care, residential tree distributions and community greening projects.
  • Train and supervise TreePeople’s South LA/SELA’s urban forestry team, and lead in their hiring process. Manage a growing team of Community Forestry staff and Community Organizers.
  • Provide leadership by mentoring and supporting the Community Forestry team members with all tasks.
  • Ensure all team members receive annual reviews and corrective work plans as necessary.
  • Drive cultural inclusiveness by partnering with external community organizations, local schools, elected officials, and other community members to identify practical strategies to improve access to green spaces in urban communities of high need.
  • Ensure development and implementation of project work plans, including event scheduling, dig alert, tree sourcing and inspections.
  • Ensure that the team manages and maintains work vehicle, supply, and equipment inventories.
  • Ensure that contract and funder reporting requirements, including documentation and presentation of project deliverables, including photos and sign-in sheets, preparation of narrative summaries, and GHG calculations.
  • Participate and represent TreePeople at meetings, fundraising, marketing, membership and volunteer events.
  • Assist with TreePeople’s policy and research and public education initiatives, including but not limited to climate and water resilience, urban heat island mitigation, urban cooling, urban forestry management plans, and equity.
  • Southeast Los Angeles staff are required to report to the Vernon office with remote work available at the Associate Director’s discretion.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs, plans, and assigns necessary duties to assigned team members.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Assess, develop, and implement skill and professional development training needs of the team.
  • Oversees the recruiting, onboarding, and discipline of employees in coordination with the Director of Human Resource and in accordance with TreePeople’s policies.
  • Manage day-to-day regional operations, including oversight of employees, duties, providing direction as needed and ensuring timely and accurate approval and submission of employee timesheets and reimbursement requests.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA/BS degree in Forestry, Ecological Restoration, Natural Sciences, Conservation Biology, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 5 years of experience with staff supervision, project management and community engagement.
  • Strong foundation of urban forestry principles and best practices, including experience planting and caring for street trees.
  • ISA Certified Arborist designation or ability to attain within 3 months after being hired.
  • Highly organized, strong work-ethic, friendly, smart, proactive and a quick-learner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: engaging, listening, negotiating, public speaking and writing.
  • Strong leadership, team-building and problem-solving skills.
  • 5 years of experience with staff supervision, project management and community engagement.
  • Familiarity with local climate and water resilience and environmental issues impacting diverse communities throughout Southern California.
  • Proficient computer skills, (Google workplace, ASANA, Slack, Salesforce, Nationbuilder).
  • Spanish fluency is preferred.

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Conservation, the Wildland Restoration Crew Foreperson works closely with the Mountain Forestry (Sr.) Program Manager or Program Manager to provide field labor for all aspects of habitat restoration. This includes but is not limited to the removal and control of nonnative invasive plant species through manual, mechanical, and chemical methods, the application of native seeds, the installation and maintenance of container plants, construction and maintenance of temporary irrigation systems, and erosion control. The team will engage in activities across various locations, including the Santa Monica Mountains, Angeles National Forest, San Bernardino Mountains, and other local ranges in Southern California.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit, train, and manage Crew Members in all relevant technical project skills necessary to promote safety and high-quality project completion. Skills include, but are not limited to: situational awareness, proper tool use, ergonomics/body mechanics and appropriate methods for project implementation which meet partner agency standards
  • Develop week-long and daily work plans consistent with project needs and crew capacity
  • Communicate and organize work in conjunction with the partner/land management agency’s technical advisor or contractor; ensure project completion to the satisfaction of partner expectations
  • Regularly keep in communication with TreePeople’s program staff and partners including the following possible: USFS / Angeles National Forest, National Park Service, LA County, and others to identify, implement, survey, and track restoration projects in the Angeles National Forest, and ensure partner’s needs and expectations are met.
  • Ensure safety as the top priority during all restoration activities and projects; promote a ‘culture of safety’ with emphasis on adherence to TreePeople policies and procedures
  • Maintain accurate records, in alignment with our standard operating procedures, including timesheets, personnel, Crew Member development, inventory, safety and work project records
  • Support TreePeople's nursery by participating in seed collection and treatment and any propagation-related activity.
  • Oversee external crews such as conservation corps and contractors.
  • Assist with specified grant report data collection, writing, and narrative analysis.
  • Maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles. Ensure all tools are in working order.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 years of experience in managing field crews across diverse areas such as habitat restoration, wildlife management, trail building, weed abatement, and irrigation system maintenance.
  • Qualified Applicator License from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
  • Experience with safe chainsaw operation (Felling trees,limbing, bucking, and pruning)
  • A valid driver's license is required; must be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check.
  • Ability to obtain Wilderness Advanced First Aid/CPR training.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA CLIMATE ACTION CORPS (CCAC):

California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is a Governorʼs initiative national service program led by California Volunteers, Office of the Governor and implemented by Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) dedicated to advancing climate actions that engage community members, cultivate change, and leave a lasting impact.

CCAC is part of a larger statewide initiative to address the climate crisis by placing emerging leaders with public agencies, nonprofits, tribal communities, and educational institutions to mobilize communities through volunteer engagement, climate action, and education service projects focused on urban greening, organic waste and edible food recovery, and wildfire resiliency.

Selected Fellows will serve 1700+ hours as AmeriCorps members over approximately eleven months, supporting community volunteer engagement, climate action, or education projects in vulnerable communities across the state. With a team comprising educators, organizers, foresters, and thousands of trained volunteers, TreePeople leads the charge in mobilizing communities to collaborate towards achieving climate resilience. Over the past 5 decades, TreePeople has engaged more than 3 million individuals in planting and caring for over 3 million trees. Our primary objective is to actively engage and organize communities at the local level, throughout Los Angeles County, and beyond, catalyzing a transformative response to climate change and establishing a replicable global model for climate resiliency. TreePeople is seeking 8 Fellows for 2 teams who are passionate about the environment, urban greening, forestry, climate resilience, and environmental justice, particularly those from the communities we aim to serve. The Urban Forestry Team will be based out of El Monte, CA with projects spanning Los Angeles County, and the Mountain Forestry Team will be based out of Beverly Hills, CA with projects spanning the Angeles National Forest.

Urban Forestry Team duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct post-fire reforestation and habitat restoration efforts in designated areas, removing invasive species and flash fuels to preserve native plant ecosystem in urban environments
  • Identify suitable sites for tree planting initiatives in urban areas, lead tree planting and maintenance activities, and monitor site progress to promote equitable tree canopy coverage

Mountain Forestry Team duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct post-fire reforestation and habitat restoration efforts in designated areas, removing invasive species and flash fuels to preserve native plant ecosystem in the Angeles National Forest
  • Assist with seed collection, treatment, and propagation activities as needed

All Team duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Recruit, coordinate, and support volunteers to assist with urban tree planting and care events and forest restoration to foster community engagement, raise awareness, and promote environmental stewardship
  • Cultivate relationships with community members through effective communication, volunteer retention efforts, and event participation to encourage community engagement and sustain conservation efforts
  • Track program data and analyze results to quantify climate impact
  • Participation in training not to exceed 20% (340-hours) of total service hours
  • Fellow duties will not include any prohibited or unallowable activities per 45 CFR § 2520.65
  • Fellow duties will not supplant, duplicate, or displace staff as outlined in 45 CFR § 2540.100 (e)-(f)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Live in California by August 16, 2024
  • Must be age 18 or older by September 16, 2024
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in Volunteer Engagement, Event Coordination, Community Outreach, Environmental Education, Field Experience, Home Hardening/ Defensible Space, Volunteer Management, Environmental Justice/ Equity, Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration, Event Planning, GIS / Mapping, and Data/ Quantitative Analysis. Other valuable contributions include:

  • An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service
  • Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change
  • Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities
  • Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills

BENEFITS OF SERVICE:

Fellows with TreePeople will work on forest health resilience projects in Angeles National Forest and tree canopy equity initiatives in urban areas, gaining skills and hands-on experience in habitat restoration, volunteer coordination, community engagement, and environmental education. Fellows will receive supervision and training from experienced staff members and have the chance to earn certifications such as CPR/First Aid/AED. Other benefits include:

  • Receive up to $33,000 stipend (before taxes) distributed evenly over the 11-month service term
