TreePeople seeks a full-time, bilingual (Spanish/English) Community Engagement Associate Manager to grow our regional presence and further our regional programmatic goals in the Inland Empire. This position will help guide our regional team in developing and implementing research-based, creative, and lasting strategies to engage community members in our project areas across Riverside and San Bernardino County. Aimed to increase our regional support base of community involvement, volunteerism, and dissemination of program resources.

Furthermore, the Community Engagement Associate Manager will participate, represent, and lead public-facing events such as town hall meetings, fundraisers, community-focused programming, community workshops, community educational events, canvassing, door-to-door knocking, etc. In addition, this role will support our Urban Forestry team in engaging community members during community tree plantings, tree care events, and tree distribution events, by working closely with forestry staff to facilitate and supervise community volunteers. Other tasks may include supporting our regional team in developing, implementing, and coordinating regional special projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Engagement (70%):

  • Assist senior staff in developing regional community outreach and engagement strategies to increase community knowledge and participation in our regional projects.
  • Serve as a community liaison by participating and representing TreePeople at public-facing events such as town hall meetings, fundraisers, community-focused programming, community workshops, community educational events, canvassing, door-to-door knocking, etc.
  • Lead community engagement outreach efforts and recruit a diverse group of stakeholders, including, but not limited to, community-based organizations, faith-based groups, neighborhood associations, advocacy groups, businesses, and public officials, to support regional programmatic goals and deliverables.
  • Lead in developing, implementing, and evaluating bilingual community outreach materials, printed media, and social media content in collaboration with other TreePeople Departments (Education, Marketing, Forestry, Policy, etc.,) to increase community participation in regional projects. Additionally, communicate directly with TreePeople’s Marketing and Communications department to coordinate event photography, social media posts, branding, outreach materials, and press releases.
  • Support our community volunteer tree plantings, tree care events, or tree distributions to further foster relationships with volunteers. This may also include event preparation, assisting volunteers and attendees, supervising volunteers during tree installations, and post-event clean-up.
  • Cultivate regional relationships to identify and develop community champions that can leverage TreePeople’s work as community champions.
  • Cultivate and manage volunteer and supporter contact information within TreePeople’s internal Databases.
  • Assist in promoting foundational support for TreePeople, including TreePeople Membership through The Canopy monthly giving program and one-time support through our donation portal.
  • Assist and contribute to cultivating an organizational culture of philanthropy.
  • Communicate and elevate all donation inquiries that involve interest in a Major or Legacy Gift to the Development Team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Community Education (30%):

  • Lead in developing, implementing, and evaluating regional community engagement events, including but not limited to leading community workshops, leading community educational programming, leading field trips, providing environmental presentations, etc., in collaboration with other TreePeople Departments (Education, Marketing, Forestry, Policy, etc.) to increase community knowledge and participation.
  • Lead in developing, implementing, and evaluating regional educational printed and digital materials in collaboration with other TreePeople Departments (Education, Marketing, Forestry, Policy, etc.) containing but not limited to educational printed media, educational social media content, educational audio and video recordings, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 years of experience in project management.
  • Experience with computer applications and database management.
  • Interest in local climate resilience and environmental issues impacting underserved communities.
  • Strong leadership, team-building, and problem-solving skills, highly organized, strong work ethic, proactive, and a quick learner.
  • Available to work flexible schedules, including weekends.
  • A driver’s license and proof of insurance are required.
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience in project management, political science or related field.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.

The Community Forestry program engages, inspires, and supports residents to take environmental action in their communities. This position will conduct various aspects of the project such as tree planting, tree maintenance, volunteer coordination, community engagement, and data collection within the San Gabriel Valley region and surrounding communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the organization of community tree planting and tree care events with local volunteers.
  • Plant and maintain 15-gallon street trees.
  • Assist with community workshops and volunteer led events, attend site visits, and help manage and maintain TreePeople tool inventory and trucks.
  • Drive a truck to transport trees and water trees on a regular basis.

The Community Forestry Associate Manager will oversee implementation of projects that significantly expand tree canopy in Southeast Los Angeles and South Los Angeles by planting and caring for public trees. The Community Forestry Associate Manager will lead development and city approval of planting plans, sourcing of tree stock, organization and execution of staff and volunteer tree planting, care and distribution events, and ongoing staff tree care. The position will help to engage and inspire community members regarding the important benefits of tree canopy expansion, growing public support for the project and a base of community volunteers. The position must also ensure accurate tracking and reporting of key metrics, including trees planted, distributed, and cared for through routine maintenance. The Community Forestry Associate Manager will supervise a team of urban forestry positions and will also be supported by administrative and communications staff and a community organizer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, evaluate and expand programs to ensure a healthy, functioning urban forest and increase tree canopy coverage in high-need areas by organizing and engaging communities in fun and meaningful tree plantings, tree care, residential tree distributions and community greening projects.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and support community volunteers on tree plantings, tree care and community greening projects.
  • Train and supervise TreePeople’s Southeast Los Angeles and South Los Angeles Community Forestry team, and play a leading role in their hiring process.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, including oversight of the Community Forestry team, providing direction as needed and ensuring timely and accurate approval and submission of associate timesheets.
  • Conduct performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with local community-based organizations, elected officials, public agencies, businesses and other community stakeholders to expand TreePeople’s social and environmental impact.
  • Conduct site assessments and develop detailed planting plans that include species and locations.
  • Develop and implement project work plans, including event scheduling, dig alert, permitting, tree sourcing and inspection.
  • Organize, support and lead community workshops and volunteer led events, evaluating future opportunities and attend site visits.
  • Manage and maintain vehicle, supply and equipment inventories.
  • Gather monitor and track data on tree plantings for reporting requirements and to ensure successful implementation of tree maintenance plans.
  • Support contract and funder reporting requirements, including documentation and presentation of project deliverables, including photos and sign-in sheets, preparation of narrative summaries, and greenhouse gas calculations.
  • Conduct community engagement and draft outreach and educational materials to grow interest in volunteer event opportunities, urban tree canopy expansion and community led tree care.
  • Participate and represent TreePeople at meetings, fundraising, marketing, membership and volunteer events.
  • Assist with TreePeople’s policy and research and public education initiatives, including but not limited to climate and water resilience, urban heat island mitigation, urban cooling, urban forestry management plans, and equity.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong foundation of urban forestry principles and best practices, including experience planting and caring for street trees.
  • Experience with staff supervision, project management and community organizing.
  • Solid computer skills, including email, document and spreadsheet basics.

We are seeking an Outdoor Equity Educator for the Natural Connections program that delivers environmental and sustainability education, family tours, and moonlight hikes to over 10,000 people each year at Coldwater Canyon Park, Salt Lake Park, Audubon Center at Debs Park, Cindy Montanez Natural Park, Rudy Ortega Park, and Stunt Ranch. The goal of the program is to connect people, especially youth, to outdoor spaces and create a more climate resilient city through the planting and care of trees; conserving, capturing and infiltrating water; creating healthy, productive soil; and more.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver intentional, fun, and educational experiences to youth, community, and family groups on most weekdays.
  • Deliver weekend guided tours through natural spaces for young people, community, and family groups as needed.
  • Deliver evening Moonlight hikes as needed.
  • Supervise, support, and lead large groups of students participating in community plantings and mountain restoration events.
  • Set up stations and ensure a clean and safe space prior to student arrival.
  • Provide in-class educational opportunities at schools, local libraries, and other education-centric spaces.
  • Maintain all equipment, displays, and props needed to carry out Natural Connections tours, Eco-Tours, Family Tours, and Moonlight Hikes.

The School Partnerships Associate Manager will be responsible for assisting the Managers, Associate Director, and Director of TreePeople’s Environmental Education and Outdoor Equity programs (i.e., the leadership team) to support new partnerships and maintain enduring partnerships with schools and education-based organizations, their teachers and administrators.

This position helps guide the strategic targets and impact of department’s team of ~20 members who provide interpretive field trips (access to nature, stewardship, and service-learning projects) and on-campus project-based outdoor learning and presentations; this key position collaborates with the department’s leadership team and coordinators to track, target, and optimize partner development, outreach presentations and calls/meetings, community engagement, teacher communications and recognition, geostrategy, data management, and program deliverables in order to benefit our school partners and communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the Environmental Education and Outdoor Equity leadership team to maintain and support partnerships with schools, teachers, administrators, school districts, and youth across K-12 grade bands to strengthen our goals and target regions identified by TreePeople and Los Angeles County Public Works.
  • Promote high attendance and engagement in Environmental Education and Outdoor Equity workshops and programming across Los Angeles County through demonstrated expertise in project management, communication, and geostrategy.
  • Facilitate high-quality outreach presentations and discussions at educator conferences, school district/administrator meetings and local events targeted to teachers and students, providing responsive communication to stakeholders regarding the department’s programs and opportunities.

  • Manage Generation Earth Website, newsletter, and social media outreach in collaboration with both Managers of Environmental Education and Outdoor Equity (both Middle School and High Schools) as well as the department’s Director and Associate Director; coordinate with TreePeople’s Marketing and Communications Team.
  • Contribute to consistent and accurate reporting, metrics tracking, and data collection for key Environmental Education and Outdoor Equity initiatives in collaboration with the department’s leadership team and TreePeople’s Strategy & Impact Manager.

Under the direction of the Wildland Restoration Crew Foreperson, the Wildland Restoration Tech works across all our restoration projects in the Santa Monica Mountains, Angeles National Forest, San Bernardino Mountains and other local ranges of mountains in Southern California. Tasks include weed removal, native plantings, plant propagation, surveying/monitoring of insects or trees and long-term maintenance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide all labor aspects for habitat restoration and forest health management including but not limited to nonnative invasive plant species removal and control (manual, mechanical, and chemical methods), native seed application and container plant installation and maintenance, construction and maintenance of temporary irrigation systems, and erosion control.
  • Use ArcGIS to survey and monitor various locations for restoration projects.
  • Ensure safety as the top priority during all restoration activities and projects; promote a ‘culture of safety’ with emphasis on adherence to TreePeople policies and procedures.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA CLIMATE ACTION CORPS (CCAC):

California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is a Governorʼs initiative national service program led by California Volunteers, Office of the Governor and implemented by Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) dedicated to advancing climate actions that engage community members, cultivate change, and leave a lasting impact.

CCAC is part of a larger statewide initiative to address the climate crisis by placing emerging leaders with public agencies, nonprofits, tribal communities, and educational institutions to mobilize communities through volunteer engagement, climate action, and education service projects focused on urban greening, organic waste and edible food recovery, and wildfire resiliency.

Selected Fellows will serve 1700+ hours as AmeriCorps members over approximately eleven months, supporting community volunteer engagement, climate action, or education projects in vulnerable communities across the state. CCAC meets Californians where they are and provides meaningful opportunities for everyone to take climate action. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

TreePeople, one of California's largest independent environmental organizations, is dedicated to empowering individuals to embrace personal responsibility for nurturing a safe, healthy, enjoyable, and sustainable environment. With a team comprising educators, organizers, foresters, and thousands of trained volunteers, TreePeople leads the charge in mobilizing communities to collaborate towards achieving climate resilience. Over the past 5 decades, TreePeople has engaged more than 3 million individuals in planting and caring for over 3 million trees. Our primary objective is to actively engage and organize communities at the local level, throughout Los Angeles County, and beyond, catalyzing a transformative response to climate change and establishing a replicable global model for climate resiliency. TreePeople is seeking 8 Fellows for 2 teams who are passionate about the environment, urban greening, forestry, climate resilience, and environmental justice, particularly those from the communities we aim to serve. The Urban Forestry Team will be based out of El Monte, CA with projects spanning Los Angeles County, and the Mountain Forestry Team will be based out of Beverly Hills, CA with projects spanning the Angeles National Forest.

Urban Forestry Team duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct post-fire reforestation and habitat restoration efforts in designated areas, removing invasive species and flash fuels to preserve native plant ecosystem in urban environments
  • Identify suitable sites for tree planting initiatives in urban areas, lead tree planting and maintenance activities, and monitor site progress to promote equitable tree canopy coverage

Mountain Forestry Team duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct post-fire reforestation and habitat restoration efforts in designated areas, removing invasive species and flash fuels to preserve native plant ecosystem in the Angeles National Forest
  • Assist with seed collection, treatment, and propagation activities as needed

All Team duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Recruit, coordinate, and support volunteers to assist with urban tree planting and care events and forest restoration to foster community engagement, raise awareness, and promote environmental stewardship
  • Cultivate relationships with community members through effective communication, volunteer retention efforts, and event participation to encourage community engagement and sustain conservation efforts
  • Track program data and analyze results to quantify climate impact
  • Participation in training not to exceed 20% (340-hours) of total service hours
  • Fellow duties will not include any prohibited or unallowable activities per 45 CFR § 2520.65
  • Fellow duties will not supplant, duplicate, or displace staff as outlined in 45 CFR § 2540.100 (e)-(f)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Live in California by August 16, 2024
  • Must be age 18 or older by September 16, 2024
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in Volunteer Engagement, Event Coordination, Community Outreach, Environmental Education, Field Experience, Home Hardening/ Defensible Space, Volunteer Management, Environmental Justice/ Equity, Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration, Event Planning, GIS / Mapping, and Data/ Quantitative Analysis. Other valuable contributions include:

  • An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service
  • Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change
  • Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities
  • Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills

BENEFITS OF SERVICE:

Fellows with TreePeople will work on forest health resilience projects in Angeles National Forest and tree canopy equity initiatives in urban areas, gaining skills and hands-on experience in habitat restoration, volunteer coordination, community engagement, and environmental education. Fellows will receive supervision and training from experienced staff members and have the chance to earn certifications such as CPR/First Aid/AED. Other benefits include:

  • Receive up to $33,000 stipend (before taxes) distributed evenly over the 11-month service term
  • Earn up to $10,000 in education awards (before taxes and upon completion of 1700 hours)
  • Participation in 170-340 hours of training and professional development
  • Receive food assistance via CalFresh (for those eligible)
  • Forbearance on existing qualifying student loans and interest payments accrued during the service term
  • Minimum essential healthcare coverage
  • Childcare assistance (for those eligible)

ABOUT BACR:

As the program implementation lead, Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) is responsible for the member's (Fellow's) recruitment and placement at the Host Partner Site listed above. BACR is the Implementing Agency that manages the Fellows' payroll and benefits.
