LA’s Best Secret Night Hike

For more than four decades, Moonlight Hikes have been one of the most beloved traditions at TreePeople — a uniquely Los Angeles experience where music, movement, and environmental education come together beneath the stars. Originally launched near the start of TreePeople as “Full Moon Hikes,” the gatherings invited Angelenos into the mountains after dark to explore the natural world and learn something about it at the same time.

The experience sits at the intersection of physical activity, entertainment, and environmental education — a combination that feels increasingly rare in urban life. What began as a guided nature walk gradually evolved into something much bigger. The hikes became a rare cultural space in Los Angeles where entertainment and ecology shared equal importance.

After the pandemic temporarily paused in-person gatherings, the program returned in January 2022 with renewed energy and a new creative partnership through musical curations by Living Earth’s, a Los Angeles-based outdoor arts collective that creates immersive experiences blending live music, ecology, storytelling, and community gathering in natural spaces across Southern California. That collaboration transformed the pre-hike gathering into a true outdoor concert series. Every event now begins with music at 7pm as guests arrive with blankets and friends to settle into the canyon before hiking begins at 8pm. The performances range wildly in style: from ambient experimental synthesizers and ceremonial soundscapes to indie rock bands and avant-garde jazz ensembles — reflecting Los Angeles’ deeply diverse creative culture.

But the heart of Moonlight Hikes has always been the hike itself. TreePeople’s Eco-Educators lead participants through Coldwater Canyon Park and neighboring Wilacre Park while teaching about native ecology, local wildlife, watershed systems, and the hidden nighttime rhythms of the mountains.

Part of what makes the program so special is its accessibility. The “Coyote Crawl” allows families, children, and anyone looking for a slower-paced walk to participate comfortably while taking in the sounds of owls, insects, and rustling chaparral. Meanwhile, more advanced hikes like the “Night Owl Prowl” challenge participants with steep climbs and rugged trails that can leave hikers balancing on all fours as they scramble through the canyon under moonlight.
Over the years, Moonlight Hikes have quietly become one of the most magical date nights in Los Angeles because they offer something increasingly difficult to find: genuine connection. Couples, families, artists, hikers, and environmentalists gather together not in a nightclub or theater, but in the mountains, sharing music and moonlight while rediscovering the wild edges of the city.
