BMO Donates $200,000 to Help Plant Trees in South and Southeast Los Angeles

We’re thrilled to announce a new partnership between TreePeople and BMO, to address tree equity in South and Southeast Los Angeles County. This collaboration tackles environmental and climate challenges in communities that have historically faced significant environmental burdens, particularly due to decades of redlining and industrial zoning.

In South and Southeast Los Angeles, we will plant 1,500 mature trees and distribute 500 more across these neighborhoods. This project’s impact has been greatly increased thanks to a generous donation from BMO. These trees will be strategically planted to mitigate the effects of extreme heat, poor air quality, and other environmental stressors that disproportionately affect these areas.

TreePeople is committed to ensuring that the voices of local residents are heard and that their needs are prioritized. Our comprehensive approach includes authentic community organizing–from planning to planting–and ongoing care to ensure the success of these green investments.

Community engagement is at the heart of this project. We will meet residents where they are—whether through canvassing, tabling at local events, or partnering with other community-based organizations—to build strong local support and a plan that maximizes the benefits of trees.

“This partnership reflects BMO’s shared vision for a sustainable future where all communities have access to the benefits of a healthy environment, and our commitment to Boldly Grow the Good in business and life. Together, we are working to drive progress for a more resilient and vibrant Los Angeles,” said Helen Seibel, Head, Community and Employee Giving, BMO.

The planting of 1,500 trees will take place during the wetter months, using best management practices to ensure the right tree is planted in the right place to maximize efficacy. This effort will be a blend of volunteer events, workforce development programs, and hands-on work by TreePeople staff. These events are more than just planting trees: they’re opportunities for community members to learn, connect, and take pride in improving their neighborhoods.

We will also host tree distribution events where residents can receive 5-gallon fruit or shade trees at no cost, accompanied by tree care workshops to ensure the community is equipped to maintain and nurture their new trees for years to come.

This effort will be complemented by workforce and youth development opportunities. These opportunities for youth and young adults will include paid positions to gain experience in the environmental sector, service-learning projects, field trips, and volunteer opportunities – nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders.

We are profoundly grateful to the team at BMO for their unwavering commitment to environmental equity and for joining us in this critical mission. BMO’s generous support not only helps us bring much-needed green spaces to these communities but also strengthens the fabric of the neighborhoods we serve.

With BMO’s donation, TreePeople is better equipped to take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable and just future for all. Together, we are not just planting trees—we are planting hope, resilience, and a shared vision for a greener, healthier, and more equitable Los Angeles.

Thank you, BMO, for supporting TreePeople and the communities we serve. Your partnership is invaluable, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
