Namaste, Girl-Karma!

If what goes around comes around, then the group Girl-Karma can expect major Earth Day kudos for its members’ commitment to improving environmental health. Our wonderful volunteer Michelle Moy talked about her experience planting trees with TreePeople for the group’s Karma in Action column. She wanted to share what she learned about the benefits of trees, in order to inspire other young women to be agents for change, in their city and for their planet.

Michelle learned, among other things, that people are as important to the health of the urban forest as trees are. She connected with fellow volunteers to plant trees in a residential neighborhood, and bonded with them over the experience “getting to see firsthand how trees really affect our lives.” We, in turn, are inspired by people like Michelle, who treat every day like Earth Day.

Today, Earth Day 2013, we hope you’re inspired—by Girl-Karma, TreePeople, and all those dedicated to making our lives on earth sustainable—to make a commitment to greening your community. Ask your neighborhood council how you can get involved in local trash clean-up days or how you can reach out to neighbors who want to replace a lawn with native plants. Join TreePeople for our many tree planting and tree care activities throughout the year, from Santa Monica Mountains habitat restoration to Citizen Forester training. Or spend two hours at our Coldwater Canyon park headquarters tending plants that grow in our gardens. As the Karma Girls say, “no action is too small!”
