Oaktoberfest: A morning of oak saplings, education, and community!

Coldwater Canyon Park was buzzing with neighbors, families, and plenty of people excited about adopting a coast live oak sapling at TreePeople’s recent Oaktoberfest Oak Giveaway!

After attendees selected their oak sapling (many walked away with up to five), they explored our oak identification station, tree planting demo, or simply enjoyed learning more about SoCal’s native oaks and TreePeople’s programs and initiatives like Rooting for LA.

Oaktoberfest helped us add 84 more distributed trees to our overall Rooting for LA goal of planting and distributing 28,000 trees by 2028 for a greener, healthier, and more beautiful Los Angeles region for decades to come!

Fun with our Native Oaks!

There was fun for every age: coloring for the kids and a feeling station of various acorns and leaves like valley oaks, coast live oaks, and more! Each giveaway was paired with a guide on how to plant and care for these future giants. While the saplings distributed were around a year old, they’ll grow into the iconic native coast live oaks that define much of our region’s landscape. Attendees left with an understanding that they were adopting a new family member and an important piece of living infrastructure that will create lasting environmental benefits.

These oaks have deep, wide roots to tap groundwater and our planting demo station helped attendees visualize the best way to plant their new adoptee. They also had a chance to speak with TreePeople’s Nursery Associate Manager Katie Aymar about what their tree needs to grow and flourish.

Two of our Rooting for LA Ambassadors, Stephanie Carrie and Isaias Hernandez, joined us in giving away saplings and sharing important facts about adopting an oak tree. They helped bring vibrant energy to the occasion along with our happy tree mascot.

What Happens Next

If you adopted a sapling or are interested in planting an oak on your own, know that with proper care, these trees will go on to have large canopies and require 30-foot diameter of space to branch out and thrive.

The saplings attendees received will help support Rooting for LA, our initiative to plant 28,000 trees throughout Greater Los Angeles by 2028. If you planted your tree or wanted to be counted in this effort, tell us where you’re planting and even share a pic by filling out this tree registration form! You’ll be one step closer to rooting for LA with us!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us, including our Rooting for LA ambassadors! We’re grateful to everyone who came prepared with totes or boxes, and we extend a special thank you to our Canopy members who left with a free tote in hand.

Oaktoberfest is one of many Rooting for LA events we are hosting ahead of the 2028 Games, we hope to see you at the next one! You can learn more about our upcoming events via our newsletter and at treepeople.org/events.

🌳 Keep planting and caring for our urban canopy!
