Tree History: Altadena’s Christmas Tree Lane

If you pass by Altadena’s Santa Rosa Avenue during the holidays, you’ll come across a magical sight—hundreds of towering deodar cedars, adorned with colorful, twinkling Christmas lights. When massive fires blazed through large swaths of the community last January, so much was lost—but amid all the devastation, there was one small miracle—Christmas Tree Lane’s 140-year-old deodar cedar trees survived, as did the majority of its structures. Learn about how Christmas Tree Lane has bounced back after the fires in our latest Tree History video.

Toyon—SoCal’s Most Festive Native Plant

PSA: That red and green plant you see growing everywhere in SoCal this time of year is NOT European holly: it’s toyon, a native plant that is essential to our local ecosystem. But in the early 1900s, many people used it for their Christmas decor anyway...a fad that almost drove it to extinction! Learn more about the history of this festive plant—and why planting one in your yard can be a wonderful gift for our environment.
